looking for compatible memory upgrade for Toshiba netbook

Postby borolz » Thu Jul 29, 2010 3:44 pm

Greetings. I have a Toshiba Satellite T215D-S1150RD Gemini Red AMD Athlon II Neo K325(1.30GHz) 11.6" 2GB Memory 320GB HDD Netbook, and I'm looking for a 4GB memory module upgrade.

I was wondering if the "Mushkin Enhanced Essentials 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model 991644" is compatible with this computer?

I was told by another memory maker that memory modules that use 8 "low density" chips will not work on my netbook, what I need is a module that uses 4 "high density" chips. So if you can recommend a compatible Mushkin product I would like to try it.

Thanks.

Edit: oh, I forgot to say that one product that I tried that I know does not work is: "Patriot Signature 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model PSD34G10662S", just in case that is useful info for determining compatibility.

Hi,

The 991644 module works well in the Toshiba's, it should work in your as well.
I will check to make sure that it has 4 chips per side when the office is open in the morning

The 991644 module has 8 chips per side.

The only SODIMM module we have that has 4 per side is the 991646

Would it help any to try to match the memory that came in the netbook? I looked inside it, and this Samsung product is the memory it came with (the page seems to have pretty detailed specs, but it's Greek to me):

I'm not sure if the number of chips was a red herring as the Samsung memory inside has 8 chips on each module side. So anyway, if you think the 991644 matches well enough, I'll give it a shot and let you know if I succeed. Thanks.

It would appear that the 4 chips per side thing was a red herring, the other module you tried appeared to have 4 chips per side.

The 991644 part should work.

How many GBs are you trying to get in total? 8?

Thanks. I'll give it a try probably early next week and will let you know how it goes.

I thought I'd shoot for a total of 6GB, so my plan was to add 1 4GB module to the current 2GB. But I might possibly upgrade again later to 8GB total.

Sadly the 991664 did not work in the netbook. The amount of memory is recognized in the BIOS, but the system hangs after leaving the BIOS setup. I guess I'll RMA the module and try something else.

Maybe a 996643 might be up your ally. It's 2x2GB kit, but if you're looking for a 4GB module. The only other thing I can think of is that both slots in the laptop need to be populated for the system to boot properly; at least, that's what I needed for my laptops.

Well, I'm shooting for 6GB, but I suppose if I can't do that I might try for 4GB total.

I've tried the 991664 by itself in either slot and with the original 2GB stick in either slot, and whenever the 991664 is installed, my netbook hangs on boot. It's pretty much the identical behavior with the previous memory module that I tried that also didn't work. I guess the netbook is just really finicky. I really wish I understood what the problem was so that I knew exactly what memory to look for. It just seems so strange to me that not all PC3 8500 DDR3 1066 memory is the same as the rest.

Agreed. I'll try to do some more research into the laptop and see what I can figure out from it.
