Ahem. I was thinking about buying the HP3-8500 3GB set, but there are two things bothering me. Could I run a Core i7 920 on stock clocks with 1333MHz RAM? It seems no, which brings me to the other issue; the HP series heatsink color. I want black >:] So.. will I have to paint it myself or just ignore the thing?

1. Depends on the motherboard, some have unlocked memory multi's
2. Heatsinks are blue on the hp series, xp series is black

Personally I like the blue, its very nice.

Ok, I haven't decided which mobo yet, so I'll keep that in mind. But as the memory controller is on the CPU, shouldn't the lockedness only depend on it and not the mobo?

But seriously, will higher clocked memory ( 1333MHz, 1600MHz ) actually be faster at all ( are we talking about differences of 2% or 50% ), or should I just go with the low latency 1066MHz ones?

And... I'm not a huge fan of case windows so I won't be looking at the heatsinks for too long anyways (: Plus there will probably be all kinds of other colors that I don't love.

EDIT: The HP-550 PSU also looks something I might get.. Of course bad to ask on these forums, but is it a good choice or is there anything better on the ~500W area?

Core i7 gets huge gains from higher memory speeds with the huge available memory bandwidth.
In real world programs though, gains would be more 2-3% area, like games etc.

The 550W is a nice psu, but core i7 can use tons of power overclocked. In a system with a 4870x2 or high end graphics card and core i7, I would want 750w+

Where is it useful then? 3D rendering, video transcoding, compiling large programs? Or only for synthetic benchmarks?

EDIT:Nah, I don't think I'll overclock it, and I'm going with a single HD4870, no X2 or crossfire.

Should work great for a psu in that case.
It would be useful for high memory bandwidth applications.
Like 7-zip, win-rar , video transcoding , synthetic benchmarks etc.

Okay then, thanks for all the help. I'll go with that HP3-8500 and HP-550 combo. Now I'll only have to decide which MB to get. Suggestions?

Both the asus and gigabyte boards are looking great to me.
The 6 slots is really nice to have for future upgrading.

Haven't seen other boards out yet.

Question, I am looking to buy your ram, but wanted to know which would be better for the Gigabyte board (ex5-ud5).. Most people say the Asus P6T is the best board for your ram as that is what it was tested on... I am here in Denver and plan on buying Friday, your thoughts

Should also work great on your board, another customer just used the 7-8-7-20 kit without issues, using a core i7 920 @ default speeds, with the 12x memory multi.

Looking to overclock either board to at least 3.4, maybe 3.6. That being said which board will your memory overclock on.
